Director of Public Relations
Directed public relations and community fundraising for a $75 million not-for-profit biomedical research institute seeking cures to diseases and commercializing new approaches to medicine. Functions included recruiting and directing a volunteer board of directors, marketing, fundraising and ensuring a constant number of volunteers.
Initiated the organization’s first community outreach function for funding and awareness, including the creation of the LA BioMed Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation and its Board of Volunteers. Since 1997, this initiative and its Board have progressively increased community support to $1.7 million per year.
Organized outreach projects, including informational programs in private residences and community events in libraries, engaging more than 3,500 participants.
Developed and implemented an annual volunteer-driven gala, attended by more than 450 guests, currently raising $460,000 in support.
Wrote 20 grant proposals to corporate donors, including Toyota, Union Bank, Wells Fargo, Northrop Grumman and NY Mellon, for the annual gala obtaining more than $200,000.
Conducted background research to identify potential donors to the institute.
Coordinated a new teen volunteer group to assist with events as hostesses, receptionists and computer aids.
Planned special events, including ground-breakings and grand openings for new buildings.
Conducted “meet and greet” tours and lunches for executives and potential donors to meet world-renowned research doctors in their research labs.
Coordinated speaking engagements for the institute's President and researchers.
Promoted the Institute by arranging the publication of dozens of articles in Peninsula People magazine, The Daily Breeze Newspaper, Peninsula News, Cox Cable and Comcast interviews.
Conducted monthly new employee orientations, including scientists, medical doctors, lab technicians and administrative staff.
Represented the Institute in the following organizations:
National Management Association: an association devoted to building management skills for Harbor-UCLA Employees. Served as Past Membership Chair. Received the Past President's Award. Currently serves as Board member.
Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce: promotes business development in Harbor City, California. Served as Board Chair.
Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce: Served as member representing LA BioMed. Acted as member of the Health Care Committee. Lobbied Congress and the Sacramento Legislature.
Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce: an advocacy group of businesses in Palo Verdes. Served as member.
South Bay Economic Development Corporation: affiliated with the LAEDC. Represented LA BioMed.
San Pedro Coordinating Council: Served as Executive Board member.
Prior Volunteer Work While Raising Three Children:
National Charity League: a mother-daughter organization that raises funds for college scholarships and philanthropies. Served as Board representative. Devoted more than 400 fundraising hours.
Toberman Settlement House San Pedro: a United Way organization helping the disadvantaged in the area. Acted as Past Chair of the Board.
Served as Community Relations Representative for the Southern California Gas Company. Spoke to more than 20,000 people annually at colleges, schools and community groups. Conducted VIP tours of company facilities in California and planned a trip to Alaska for a group of national executives.
