PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind, A California Non-Profit Corporation, Reseda, California  1987-2009

Director of Operations (1990-2009)

Established and managed building budgets, construction and state licensing for adult day, residential group home and children’s after-school programs, serving 200 individuals with disabilities, for a non-profit social services agency established in 1975. The agency presently operates with a $6 million budget. Oversaw the Maintenance Department and ensured regulatory compliance.

  • Took a lead position in fundraising for new facilities and programs, and brought more than $5 million in grant funding from various city agencies.

  • Successfully planned, funded and constructed several projects, including 11 new homes, a 10,000 square foot office/program building, a 9,000 square foot swimming pool enclosure and a 19,000 square foot children’s program building. This included the acquisition of property, design and state licensing. All buildings and structures meet ADA regulations.

  • For the agency’s office/program buildings, obtained conditional use permits and zoning variances.

  • Negotiated lower insurance premiums every year.

  • Monitored and facilitated the closing of workers’ compensation claims.

  • Wrote the agency’s policies and procedures manual.

Director of Children/Adult After-School and Saturday Programs (1993-2007) Concurrently

Recruited, trained and supervised ten support staff providing scheduling, programming, intake of participants and services for 30 school-age children. Ensured regulatory compliance and maintained open lines of communication with parents and all regional center staff.

  • Started the agency’s after-school program at Leichman High School and after the construction of a support center, transferred the program to the agency’s main campus.

  • Consistently negotiated rates with the North Los Angeles County Regional Center for specialized programs.

Day Program Director (1987-1990)

Developed the day program’s first curriculum that provided education and training to blind developmentally disabled adults. The program provided functional living skills ranging from toilet training to vocational skills. Personally trained the program’s staff in each area of the curriculum.

  • Recruited and trained day program staff.

  • Wrote and presented Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) for all program participants.

  • Expanded the number of participants from 30 to 60.

  • Due to the diverse developmental problems of each program participant, obtained special compensation rates from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE

Acted as Residential Administrator for four group homes of the Watson House, Inc. in Portland, Oregon. Served as Special Education Teacher Assistant for the Clackamas County Education Service District, and as Supervisor at the Kerr Center for Handicapped Children located in Marylhurst, Oregon.
