Human Resources Strategic Partner (2012-2013)

Providence Health and Services is a non-profit, acute-care system with more than 7,220 beds. In 2011, the Axminster Medical Group was purchased by Providence and was integrated into its network of 20 clinics. After the integration, managed employee relations, recruitment, terminations, transfers, salary adjustments and physician relations for the Axminster acquisition.

  • Managed the tuberculosis testing of 400 staff as part of Providence’s prevention screening.

  • Guided the management team in the hiring and firing processes, personnel policies, and compliance.

  • Provided compliance documentation for annual audits from Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Scan and Cigna. Passed each audit without recommendations. These audits included proof of course completion by all employees concerning fraud, waste, abuse and integrity. 

  • Hired and managed temp hires to cover for key employee absences, including physicians.

  • Conducted open enrollment sessions and new employee orientation programs.

  • Responded to all EDD, unemployment and discrimination cases.

  • Resolved more than 150 employee relations issues without a single case requiring legal or outside assistance.

Director of Human Resources, Axminster Medical Group, Los Angeles, California (1991-2011)

For 19 years, managed the human resources function for five clinics of an independent medical group serving the greater Los Angeles area with 25 physicians providing pediatric, internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology services.

  • Coordinated the employee benefits program covering 150 staff. Conducted open enrollment sessions and new employee orientation meetings for employees and physicians.

  • Prepared the 401(k) retirement plan and for a 5500 audit, and assisted with the discrimination testing data for the auditors.

  • Conducted 4,750 employee and physician screening interviews.

  • Oversaw the FMLA program, and conducted and settled investigations of workers' compensation, harassment and disability cases without any litigation.

  • Conducted quarterly safety meetings with managers.

  • Edited and published the company’s newsletter and monthly bulletins.

  • Responded to all EDD, unemployment and discrimination cases, and represented the group at unemployment hearings with no substantive judgments.

  • Coordinated 17 employee picnics, holiday events and other work-related social gatherings.

  • Resolved more than 950 employee relations issues without a single case requiring legal or outside assistance.

  • Authored, published and maintained the group’s personnel handbook.

  • Delivered training programs on sexual harassment, interviewing, discrimination, safety, compliance, strategic planning, team building and FMLA for all clinics.

  • Interviewed, negotiated and selected three companies for medical insurance, the group’s 401(k) program and workers’ compensation.

  • Reviewed and authored job descriptions for all staff, including 25 physicians.

  • Managed the purchase and maintenance of office equipment for all clinics.

Office Manager

Managed the Los Angeles office of a national legal recruiting firm with branches in San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas and New York. The Los Angeles office had three administrative and six recruiting staff.

  • Administered the employee benefits program, hiring, training and supervising secretarial support staff.

  • Proofread all outgoing correspondence.

  • Prepared production and revenue reports for the New York corporate office.

  • Invoiced clients. Served as administrative liaison to all company offices on a national basis.
