SouthWest Water Company, Los Angeles, California                                           2006-2011

Assistant Controller/Director of Tax

Prepared the income tax provision for the quarterly and annual financial statements filed with the SEC, and managed the preparation of federal and state income tax returns for a water and wastewater services provider with $211 million in revenues, 1,220 employees and operations in ten states.

  • Created a more accurate income tax provision template that calculated income tax expense, current income tax liability and deferred income tax liability for the financial statements.

  • Managed the re-statement of the tax provisions for company financials for 2005-2007, while preparing the tax provision for 2008.

  • Recovered $2.5 million in income tax refunds as a result of filing amended prior year income tax returns.

  • Prepared and filed 28 delinquent income tax returns without any penalties.

  • Amended the federal and Texas state income tax returns for 2008 and 2009 to reflect changes caused by the re-statement of the company’s 2005-2007 financial statements.

American Airports Corporation, Santa Monica, California                                     2005-2006


Managed accounting operations and risk management for an airport manager and a fixed-base operator, covering five airports, three fixed-base operators and one office building. Each operation was an individual business unit with separate financial and tax reporting requirements.

  • Revised the preparation of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. Significantly reduced the amount of time required to prepare monthly financial statements from two and one-half days down to one-half day.

  • Acquired computer hardware and updated accounting software, which permitted discovery of $100,000 of past due receivables and significantly improved collections going forward.

  • Implemented accounting systems at two fixed-base operators acquired in 2005 and 2006, located in New York and Louisiana.

  • Prepared federal and state income tax returns for 15 business units and consolidated income tax information for the primary shareholder.

Provided P&L analyses, financial planning, management reports and utilization analyses. The territory included the company’s Pacific Southwest Area for Tax Operations, which consisted of two business units encompassing three major practices at eight locations.

  • Developed annual budgets in coordination with the Area Operations Leader and Practice Leaders.

  • Prepared management reports that allowed for monitoring of performance, time and expenses.

  • Monitored actual results against the budget, and provided monthly variance analyses for the Area Operations Leader and Practice Leaders.

  • Reviewed revenue collections and prepared reports measuring revenue collections.

Managed real estate tax client relationships and the preparation of individual, partnership and corporate income tax returns with a staff of up to five accountants.
