  • Led the project for the conversion of a medical research institute’s accounting software from Jamis to Blackbaud Financial Edge, completing the installation in June 2011. It is anticipated that this new system will save $1.5 million in staffing and process improvement costs over the next three years.

  • Managed a special audit of Lytton Gardens Healthcare Center, a retirement living center with a 99-bed convalescent hospital and a residential care facility. The center was without senior financial management during the audit. The six-month project was completed on time with no audit findings.

  • At the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic, led the implementation of the Micro Information Product General Ledger Software and the design of a new Chart of Accounts and Cost Centers for a non-profit that helps under-privileged children with school programs.

  • At Skid Row Development Corporation, ensured that all government contracts were in strict compliance by having proper cost allocations and documentation.

  • At United Church of Religious Science, worked with department heads to reduce the unnecessary supplies and outside purchased services expenses, which resulted in $500,000 in cost savings over a two-year period.


LA Biomedical Research Institute, Torrance, California                                       2006-2012

Director of Accounting and Software Conversion Project

Provided a wide range of accounting support for a $75 million not-for-profit biomedical research institute seeking cures for diseases and commercializing new approaches to medicine. Functions included budgeting, accounting, external audits, treasury functions, supervision of the accounting department, tax return compilation, post-award accounting, and investments.

  • Led a major software conversion for the institute from an obsolete system to Blackbaud Financial Edge.

  • Prepared the monthly financial reports, which included the budget variance reports, the consolidated balance sheet and the cash flow reports.

  • Planned and coordinated all year-end audit activities, and prepared federal and state tax return forms 990 and 199.

  • Attended and participated in the monthly Executive Staff Meeting, the quarterly Investment Committee and the quarterly Finance/Audit Committee.

  • Recruited, hired, trained and supervised the accounting department with an accountant and six clerical staff.

  • Handled treasury functions, all wires and prepared investment reports.

  • Prepared the project job cost report and the schedule of federal awards.

  • Reviewed and approved accounts payable vouchers and credit card transactions.

Beverly Hills Surgical Institute, Beverly Hills, California                                       2005-2006

Corporate Controller/Chief Financial Officer

Supervised the preparation of the monthly financial statements for a medical group of plastic surgeons performing cosmetic surgery, with annual revenues of $50 million.

  • Managed the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, billing and collection departments.

  • Interfaced with owners, physicians and the Management Group.

  • Implemented cash and internal control procedures for 12 sites.

  • Worked with external auditors on tax returns and audits.

  • Oversaw all cash management, treasury, banking and procurement functions.

  • Supervised the preparation of the monthly financial reports. Presented cash flow reports and projections as well as financial reports to the management group.

  • Planned and supervised the year-end audit, and interfaced with external auditors.

  • Coordinated all billing functions primarily to Human Urban Development (HUD) billings, Medicare and Medical, HMOs, and private pay billings.

  • Held responsibility for all banking and treasury functions as well as for tracking all restricted and unrestricted donations.

  • Assisted with the preparation of Medicare/Medical cost reports.

  • Managed workers’ compensation and all other insurance policies.

  • Reviewed/updated accounting procedures.

United Church of Religious Science, Inc., Burbank, California                              2002-2004

Accounting Manager

Supervised the Accounting Department, including the preparation of the monthly financial reports and the year-end audit, for a religious organization with more than 250 affiliate churches throughout the country.

  • Held responsibility for banking functions and cash flow reports as well as presenting the financial reports to the Board of Trustees.

  • Prepared the annual operating and capital budgets.

  • Oversaw the upgrade and installation of the Micro Information Product (MIP), a non-profit general ledger software.
